3-2-1 AV/Workplace Technology Field Notes: Key Trends, Innovations, and Best Practices

December 6, 2024

We at IVCi are thrilled to present our “3-2-1″ AV/Workplace Technology Field Notes”!

In this series, we share three trends to watch, two innovative solutions, and one best practice tip that we’ve been observing in the exciting world of AV and emerging workplace technology. Keeping up with all the developments in the AV/IT marketplace can be quite a challenge, so we’re dedicated to keeping our clients and partners in the retail industry well-informed.

The 3-2-1 for the Week Ending 12/6/24
By Eric Smith, Executive Account Manager at IVCi

With the NRF Big Show just around the corner from January 12 to 14, let’s dive into what’s happening in our industry!

3 Trends to Watch:

The Transformative Power of AR and VR

I touched on this trend in my previous notes, but it’s worth reiterating: Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are set to make a significant impact in retail by 2025. These technologies are not just buzzwords; they’re reshaping how we engage with customers.

  • AR will enhance the real world, helping to educate, entertain, and elevate the customer experience.
  • VR will create immersive environments that foster deeper connections between retailers and customers.

I suspect we’ll see some exciting developments at NRF next month—these technologies are definitely worth keeping an eye on!

Small Footprint Digital Signage

A NYC-based retailer recently shared with me their struggle: “We can’t deploy fixed digital content in some of our stores due to infrastructure constraints or short lease times. We need mobile, flexible signage that packs more punch than print!”Enter small footprint digital posters and signage! Imagine a vibrant DvLED display that is moveable, requires almost zero installation, and is truly plug-and-play. Retailers are now exploring options like this to enhance their brand communication without the headaches of traditional setups. A great example is from DigiLED—check it out here. These displays are perfect not just for retail but also for conferences and lobbies!

The Classic “Shoot Out”

While I hesitate to call it a trend since organizations have been using this testing method for ages, the “shoot out” or “bake off” isn’t going anywhere—and for good reason! With so many options available, retailers are turning to integrators and partners to help them sort through it all. How does product solution “A” stack up against product solution “B”? This method allows retailers to make informed decisions about everything from PTZ cameras to microphones.

2 Innovative Solutions to Research:

Virtual Microphones

Shifting our focus from retail spaces to offices, let’s talk about audio challenges in large training rooms or corporate boardrooms. Traditional microphone setups often fall short in these environments. That’s where Nureva’s innovative Microphone Mist comes into play! Instead of relying on traditional beamforming microphones, Nureva has developed a virtual microphone environment that ensures everyone can be heard clearly—no matter where they are in the room. You can learn more about this fantastic solution here. I’ll be keeping a close eye on this one!

Transparent OLED Displays

Now here’s something intriguing: transparent OLED displays! While some manufacturers have showcased concepts at trade shows, they haven’t quite made their way into retail spaces yet—likely due to high costs. However, if you attended INFOCOMM or CES this year, you might have seen LG’s stunning transparent displays in action. They offer an impressive visual experience that can truly captivate customers.

Check out these videos for a closer look at their potential!

1 Best Practice Tip:

Use Your Room Booking Displays to Do More

Do you use door displays or room booking systems with screens? From a technical standpoint, these are just endpoints in your IT stack—but they can offer so much more. Several manufacturers have opened up their hardware and software architecture on these room pads, allowing content from your digital signage platform to be broadcasted directly. High-end luxury retailers have leveraged this capability to push high-quality content onto these small screens, enhancing branding while still displaying meeting information. Think of it as an additional canvas—use it creatively! Some companies even integrate badge reading (NFC/HID) for added functionality.
